Secret Santa Blog Day – the Roll Call

What was yesterday’s “Secret Santa Blog Day” malarkey all about?

“I in them and you in me — so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” John 17:23

Perhaps yesterday was a different way of illustrating: “so that they may be brought to complete unity.”

Guest Posts on WP are widespread and well received. But to agree in advance to publish as your own – no idea what you will be publishing, no veto to make changes, no spellcheck even – that I don’t see that on WordPress until yesterday (if I am wrong please let me know). The roll call is below.

But, first, let me tell you a short story …

Each one wrote (without guidance or theme) a post they then emailed to me. All knew that – unless if was “disrespectful” – it would be emailed at random to another. The only questions about the writing were the unconditional kind: what, how, can, could … The same with questions about publishing. And – along the way – a number responded to the invitation saying sorry – would love to – but lack of time, etc.

Apart from two:
Sammy, http://wethekeepers.wordpress.com, said at this point in his walk with God, he was not ready for a “Secret Santa” on his blog.
Julia, http://reflectionsduringlent.wordpress.com, said she could not commit to the deadlines, but would like to “link” if that was okay should things work out.
Both left me humbled.

And of those who said yes and participated?

They wrote in faith. They published in faith. Their only connection was God. Their only reason was Love. Their demonstration was Unity. Because I have no idea what denomination each is. I have no idea if each is “churched”. I have no idea what each’s “ologies” are. I have no idea. And I love that about this church of blogs.

This was a way of illustrating: “so that they may be brought to complete unity.” Is that not “church”? Is that not “God”? Is that not Unity?

So before the roll call – a (personal) observation or three:

1) Of those taking part in Secret Santa Blog Day, there is a combined readership in the thousands. That is a big “church”. Almost all are also bloggers and writers. Ten took part (even the disciples had twelve).

2) There are no rules and regs in this bloggy church community. There are many olgies and denominations. But – in reality – just how “clubby” is this church of blogs? Does the “discipling” go both ways? Are the titles, qualifications, labels and insecurities of the “real world” brought here? And if so – why?

I have had conversations locally – as have others – and talked of this “bloggy church” as important, an example of what can, a difference that can make … that has power And the response? Best summed up as: “Yada yada – very interesting – but it’s just an indulgent hobby.” Is that why we gather here? Really?

3) So if church is not (just) the bricks and mortar of the big-doors-building – then how is this “bloggy-church” different – are we indulging in a hobby? And just how are we each illustrating and making real: “so that they may be brought to complete unity”? Can we do that through words on a page? Ten just did.

That is why I think we each – in the thousands – can. Thank you.

So was this just another “writing challenge” … ?

You decide.

Affection, connection, love and hugs!

  1. Well done Paul. I read a few of the post and I am impressed. Good for you. Maybe next time I will put my hat in the ring. And all those who participated take a bow.

    • Sammy – thank you. And you added so much to this without writing a word (other than the wonderfully powerful words you did)! You already “put your hat in the ring” – you are an important participant – and I thank you for that.

  2. Reblogged this on descerning the heart of God and commented:

A body doesn’t function properly unless all the parts are working and working in unity. Every part unique and important. We need each other just a God intended. Each person/part with a common goal to witness to the One true God. And through faith in Jesus Christ, He has given life to this body.

  3. This was so lovely – And I must admit I knew for sure of your posting, Paul. I had a hint about Tom’s. And as soon as I read LM’s I grieved along with him. All others I truly had no idea. They were all rich in love for God. Melissa P, so honored to be your host. And Denine, I truly did springboard your post into mine, appearing tomorrow.
I feel so very blessed to be a part of this amazing church, this heart-to-heart connection through the One who loves us all so deeply we can’t ever understand. But we can wrap ourselves in the cloak of his grace and family connection – all brothers and sisters, sons and daughters of the same compassionate God.

    • Susan – I had an unfair advantage! 🙂
From beginning to now has been a privilege and honour. A real new wonderful experience. At each stage of the way – in everyone and everything – there has been a simplicity and affection. A “cloak of grace” turned up high (if that is not mixing images too much).
Big respect and much affection – community and connection – all wrapped up in His grace!
My dirt eyes seem a little moist!
      🙂

    • Susan, I am so looking forward to your post, and so honored to be used by the Lord in anyway that edifies, touches,or inspires because that is truly my heart. Love flows from Him, to us, to others – then from others, to us and back to Him. Everything for our good and His Glory!
      Love and Blessings!

      • He does work that way, Denine. His love and compassion like a bee gathering love pollen and distributing it from one to another, he uses us to nourish and encourage each other. “Love one another.” As we share a thought, an idea, a rambling, we allow someone else to bloom from a word written in good soil on down the line.
Thank you for being part of the bigger Garden.

  4. Paul, I love what you do here on your blog. Although, I wasn’t quite sure how this all worked (I will know the next time)..…I was hesitant to respond but have been a faithful reader! All of the “Secret Santa’s” spoke to my heart. May God bless each one. ~ Dale

    • Hiya Dale, and sorry for a slow reply. You are very kind, that comment means a great deal. And this was also a first for me (and all of us). That you took part is wonderful. Writing words is one thing – hearing they have all been read is satisfying. Thank you.

I don’t know if you have seen a very recent post by Little Monk – spiritual warfare – but that (in my experience) is another first. The comments below the post more free, longer in word count, and connected by comments upon comments … a real sense of safety and community.

“All of the “Secret Santa’s” spoke to my heart” – more and more I pray that “more and more” we may all speak to each other’s hearts from our own hearts. That this virtual community is a haven of safety – welcoming all – embracing all – empowering all. Faith or not – beliefs I understand – and those I don’t. A place where love is unconditional, where each is sacred, and where “I am” is what we can all be: safe to explore who we are and where we might journey – with others who desire to allow each.

Dale, the more I read comments under different posts, the more I see comments like yours. Loving, respectful, connected and inclusive. Thank you so much.
