Verses not worth reading again

This morning’s verses: so well known that they are not worth reading again.

That was my thought when I saw them. It was only guilt and habit – and a small pinch of curiosity that kept my attention this morning:

Jesus said to the crowds, “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbour’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbour, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour’s eye.” Matthew 7:1-5

But in this book of conversations, God Soft Hands Jesus, GSHJ, still has much to say.

He took me back to memories of recipes requiring “cups” – and here in our home we only have mugs. Tea cups come with tea pots and sandwich/cake plates – all the refinement of yesteryear – for those posh occasions when the “best china” is used. But we don’t live “posh yesteryear” in our home today, and even if we did – “best china” is not the “cups” I see used in recipes. So if it wasn’t “lbs and ozs”, or “kgs and gms” we would pass by that recipe.

Then a few years ago I decided “cups” are no different to small mugs – probably. So instead of passing by, I used the measures given – and imposed my own “cup measure” using our everyday mugs. It was usually one half – two thirds of a mug (depending on how big the mug was). Results were patchy – so the guesswork continued: anywhere between “some in the bottom of the mug” to “almost a full mug”. And results remained patchy. Occasionally the finished article was tasty. But mostly it wasn’t – too stodgy, too runny, to sweet, too bitter … too much “not good”.

And even if it tasted okay – we never knew if it was even close to how it was intended. So – once again – we pass by on recipes with cups.

    • Thank you Don. And we enjoy our UK recipes – the US “cups” era was many years ago. Yet He keeps drawing bits of my “whole life” into this book of conversations to make then come alive.

  2. Hiya Paul! Do u know I always read ur posts twice? The hidden meanings never clarify themselves right away for me. The second reading always brings it home for me.
    Isn’t that ironic? Considering ur subject today???
    Reading something again and again is wonderful. On any given day the words u have read a hundred times can hold unique meaning for that day and for ur particular circumstances.

    • Hiya Katie – you have made my day! Thank you. I wrote this one with absolutely clarity of “our conversation” – and then read it back and thought “hey Lord – I am not sure I “get this” “. And He just went “whatever” – or some such mutter – which always means “they’ll work it out in a way that works for them and Me”.

  3. I cook that way, too, lol! I can never find our measuring cups, so I just pull out a mug and eyeball everything… love your “measure” analogy…I just had a conversation yesterday with my youngest daughter on judging others. Your post is great food for thought 🙂

    • Hiya Julie – thank you! I have had an ambiguous relationship with this word “judge”. This morning the “cups” and “eyeballing” and not even knowing of the end result was close to what was intended made perfect sense. But I pressed Publish on this one because of a hefty nudge from Him – without any confidence it made sense to anyone else – not sure the words communicated much else than confusion. Thank you!

      • You know- after reading your response, I got to thinking- measurements are not all equal in His eyes…for instance, my being “all-in” might look very different to someone else’s “all-in”… but he makes up the differences with His love. I love that you are always obedient to hit publish…even when you think no one gets it. The awesome thing is that He always gets us 🙂
