Mary and Elizabeth didn’t even need one

When the same passage is given in my daily readings/quiet time two days in a row – someone did not “cock-up” in putting the daily readings together – our Loving Father simply thought I would benefit from stopping to ponder “why”.  And I did!

So just what is there in these verses that He is inviting me to see?

In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.” Luke 1:39-45

Do you play with different ways of reading the bible?

The s…l…o…w… way. The revolving-evolving-revolving way. The drift-away-to-some-place-else way. The one-word-highlighter way. The what-is-it-You-want-me-to-see-today way. All those different ways for a two-way conversation.

“Holy Spirit before the Holy Spirit” – how “hindsight” influences the writing here of Elizabeth being filled with the Holy Spirit.
“Connection of Love” as Mary speaks – the child-to-be-called-John in Elizabeth’s womb knows – and so does Elizabeth
• Love – the complete absence of “I was pregnant first from a promise of God – how come you are crashing my party, young unmarried lady?”
• How “the women” get on and “do” – Mary beetles off to see Elizabeth and there is an immediate connection of “essence”.
No questions or worries about “who got the bread today” – no confused “what does that mean Master” – no “why is He talking to her” mutterings – no “we are all going to drown here Jesus!”

The other day? Become “childlike”. Draw together in wonder and curiosity. Draw together in love and safety. Draw together in innocence and awe.

Today? Get to the essence. Connect to the essence. Get on and do. Get on and allow each to just “get it”. Draw together and connect to the essence of God Soft Hands Jesus – connect to Love.

I have seen both men and women “run church”. Neither is better or worse. Neither is more or less gifted.  The equipping is a gift. The gift is released through connection. Connection happens when we “get to the essence”. And we get to the essence by filling up with GSHJ … the Holy Spirit … God … Love … whatever your “name” for “the essence”.

If we don’t – we won’t.

Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. For them it was a whole new concept, a whole new “getting it.”

We have been “getting it” for 2000+ years.

The Holy Spirit has been filling us (or trying to) for 2000+ years. And now we have another Christmas to celebrate the “meaning of the Virgin Birth”. We have all the well-established “Advent” courses and preparation. We have all these carols. All these verses. All this repetition year after year.

Elizabeth felt her child move and got it. Mary heard the voice of God and got it. So many “got it” without the benefit of hindsight and knowledge. Without qualification. Without a New Testament. Without The Good News. Without The Living Word. Without so much we take for granted in the God stuff.

Love me – and you – and him/her.

As a qualification for “getting it” I sit here today in awe and wonder: “How do I follow you, oh Great One? Teach me to be a disciple – teach me the unspoken truths – teach me the inner secrets of this mystery. Show me how I may emulate you wondrousness – show me how to be like you – show me what I must do.”

(why do we make that so complicated?)

Love.  Love me – and you – and him/her.

(why do I not see any complexity?)

This morning I wonder …

Just how many Christmases does it take to get it?

(and how come Mary and Elizabeth didn’t even need one?)

  1. I am learning the simplicity of it all. This has been especially true after my spiritual hibernation. The line that struck me was, “And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.” She who believed. She just believed. She just said ok you said it I get it. It’s going to happen. Just like that. Wow, if that could be all of us. you said it I get it…
