Black Friday. Good Friday. The first saves your wallet. The second saves your soul. Maybe.
I am being emailed with special offers. All the stuff that has always been available for me to buy (just with a minus sign and a percentage discount). I am saving BIG (so the emails say). How can I afford not to buy today? Just think what I will be missing out on if I don’t join in.
And I have made a purchase. A normal price purchase. Same price as yesterday purchase. I was prompted to look sideways today. All those “minus percentages” made me think. And I found my purchase. Black Friday reached out to me – I changed – and I found something at full price.
So why mention “Good Friday”? Aren’t the two polar opposites?
Well each Good Friday (and the run up to it) I will be “inundated” with one very special offer: “He died so you don’t have to – He rose so you can too.” Just sign here and eternity will be yours. This offer is too good to miss. Come and join us. We are saved. You can be too. And we have chocolate on Easter Sunday (does it get any better than that … ?)
“Then Jesus told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” “ Luke 21:29-33
Here is “the teaching email” ….
Fig trees … leaves … seasons … prophecies fulfilled … promises kept … see these things … stuff is happening now! You must become a fig tree expert – a fig leaf expert – a detective of the end times. Are you good enough to pass the test … will YOU be taken or will you be left … ?
“Heaven and earth will pass away … ”
Heaven AND earth will pass away. WHOAHHH!!
Who just pressed the pause button on this “eternity” I signed-up for? “Will pass away ….” Is this just another minus sign in front of another percentage? Are Good Friday and Black Friday both just another sales pitch?
“But my words … will NOT pass away.”
Every day I come here to this place. Every day I read His words. Every day I hear His words. Every day I live with the sound of my God Soft Hands Jesus resonating within my very being. Every day. Every where. All where. And sitting here now I hear Him chuckle. That rich vibration of mirth. Each of my cells jiggling along. Today I am enjoying the kingdom of God. Today I am in heaven. Today I Am eternity. Today I Am of I Am.
Black Friday changes me and you. That change is down to who I am. Who I choose to be. How I allow/wish/fight/allow myself to be changed. Good Friday is no different – any change is always down to me.
So I can sign-up for my ticket to heaven. I can find that my “ticket” is big on hype but short on delivery. And I can complain (silently) that I have been conned. And I can become a “Good Christian”. I can become comfortable. I can become changed in becoming again what I was “before”.
Or I can look sideways …
We have a potted fig tree in the garden. I see its leaves come and go. If it dies we will get rid of it. If it looks pretty we will keep it. If it produces any figs we will wonder what to do with them. I don’t spend a lot of time looking at the fig tree. And when I do … ? I just see another potted plant.
But His words? These words?
They are without season. They are without special offers and deep discounts. They are without hype. They are not a promise of the future. They are a promise of the now. His words never pass away. And I seek to be changed with each word – that is my kingdom – every day – all day – all where!
So enjoy this Friday. Only you can allow you to be changed – no one else.
(not even the God we worship)
