Happy Xmas, Paul

Melanie – Candles In The Rain – Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)

“Jesus spoke to the crowds,
God Soft Hands, how come I don’t change anyone?
“But to what will I compare this generation?
It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another,
How come I keep reading how You change everyone?
How come I don’t get any crowds.
‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’
I keep reading and reading.
You keep talking and talking.
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say,
‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say,
We fit so well together You and me.
But it’s always You and me.
Just You and me.
‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
Never the crowds.
Never me doing what You do.
Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
How can I be You?
Matthew 11:16-19

So in this spirit of (“I wish I could crawl under a seat and hide”) I sang my heart out on a solo version of “Lay Down.” When I got to the second chorus, the Edwin Hawkins Singers joined in.    Melanie Safka

Jesus spoke to the crowds.
How much have I changed in the time you have known me, Paul?
Loads!
How much have I changed, Paul?
You keep changing.
How much?
You haven’t.

Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.
How much have you changed in the time you have known me, Paul?
Not much. Not really.
How much have you changed, Paul?
Some. In some parts of my life.
How much?
Okay – loads.

Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!
Is that you, Paul?
No way, God! That’s not me at all.
That you, Paul?
Sometimes. But almost never.
Paul, is that you?
It’s who I want to be, Lord.

Jesus spoke to the crowds
Would you prefer I speak to you as one of the crowd?
Hell no!!
Do you know anyone who would prefer that?
No – everyone I know wants You like this.
Like what, Paul?
Like this, Lord. Like this.

“God Soft Hands, how come I don’t change anyone?”
You do, Paul. You change.
“How come I keep reading how You change everyone?“
Because you hear me read just to you. You and me together.
“How come I don’t get any crowds.”
Which do you choose … “this” or crowds?
“I keep reading and reading. You keep talking and talking.”
Three years ago you saw me as Batman in the batmobile.
“We fit so well together You and me.”
We always have. You didn’t know how.  Not then.
“But it is always just You and me. Just You and me.”
Would you really have it any other way?
“Never the crowds. Never me doing what You do.”
This is what I do. Right now. This is what I do.  This is who I Am.
“How can I be like you?”
Look in the mirror.
You are.
Paul

Happy Xmas, Paul.
Why not linger awhile – just you and me
And Melanie … ?
