Saying goodbye

Saying goodbye …

When one moves on and one stays still
Goodbyes are expected and
Memories inspected

No saying goodbye …

When both stay still and both “move on”
No goodbyes are expected
No memories reflected.

Is physical distance the defining instance
When I can be lonely in a crowded room?

Saying goodbye …

I see parties planned and gifts expected
Words requested and eagerly collected
Memories to be shared lovingly inspected

You are leaving us all and going away
Moving home there while here we all stay
So we need to find closure this leaving day.

No saying goodbye …

But when both still are –
Yet both have “moved on”
No goodbyes are expected
No memories reflected.

No goodbyes to “friends” day after day
So why now the party
And tearful farewells
(when all still are
and none
have “moved on”)?

Because if …

Physical distance

Is the defining instance

None of us

Should ever be lonely

In a crowded room.
