Susan Irene Fox

Loss of my best friend, and sister in Christ: Gifted to us from October 24, 1950-August 16, 2017

Susan Irene Fox.  A very special person.  A wondrous living.  An unexpected dying.

Thank you, Lilka, for letting us know.

And for you both –

She Must Be Beautiful: Janis Ian

The seagulls of summer have flown
And the sailors have wintered their boats
Come sit by the fire
And tell me your secrets
Love isn’t kept easily

The windows are shuttered and closed
With blankets to keep out the cold
But you are still restless
Your heart is enchanted
Drifting away from me

And is she beautiful?
She must be pretty or worse
To ride the high seas
She must be beautiful
White linen sails
That have captured your vagrant breeze
Singing her siren song
Luring you far from the harbor
And into the gales

She must be beautiful
So beautiful
To have stolen the wind from my sails

Casting your dreams out to sea
Will you remember me?
As years go by
Washed away with the tide
It was I who set you free

And is she beautiful?
She must be pretty or worse
To ride the high seas
She must be beautiful
White linen sails
That have captured your vagrant breeze
Singing her siren song
Luring you far from the harbor
And into the gales

She must be beautiful
So beautiful
To have stolen the wind from my sails
So beautiful
To have stolen the wind from my sails.

  1. Very unexpected gentlemen when I noticed an article had popped up on my site. I simply thought Susan had written something else about love and hate. I didn’t I read the post for at least an hour bogged down nonsense and was rather confused until I saw “Donna” at the end. I had to read it twice before reality sank in.

A very fitting poem Paul. It is beautiful and serene. I suspect Susan would be well pleased.

    • Lilka, thank you. I was in the car park on the bus and saw a FB update of the WP Church Set Free post (which confused me) – and then got home and went through them slowly – and only then realised it was indeed Susan.

Distance and time don’t seem to be factors at times like this. Skype and this God stuff and these posts cut through all that. Reading the comments on her post and yours this morning – what a lovely confirmation of how much love she gave and attracted. This morning I suddenly realised how little we tell each other of our love and affection for each other – how much we just take living for granted. In this case I am just so glad you expressed your grief and allowed us all to be part of saying adieu to a wonderfully funny and gracious human being.

      MASSIVE ((HUGS)) to you

    • Thanks for letting us know Lilka. I commented on your site also, but I am in shock. It is so sudden and so sad. Still trying to process. She was a good friend and precious gift to the blogging community. Praying for us all.

But I know Susan’s celebrating right now. And I can rejoice in that. I hate death for this reason but remembering that Jesus defeated death for us! We will all be together forever one day and that’s a happy thought.

      • Yeah, Mel it was shocking to say the least. Most people haven’t realized I didn’t write the post that appeared on my blog.

Susan had access to my site. I’m wondering if someone saw the WP log in info and thought they were posting to her site Or, she left instructions as to how to notify her WP family if anything happened to her. Other bloggers actually saw it before I did. I was just as surprised as everyone else but I was able to reblog it to a site we both had access to.
I am kind of numb but we know she is truly in a better place and with our Lord. Her light will be missed.

    • Hi Cate – see the comments above to Lilka: it was confusing to know for a while. And then just shock and sadness. I have a picture in my moind’s eye of her on skype. Her cat sleeping or strolling slowly in the background. Susan checking out an email or link to something on her screen just off camera. That serenity. And generosity! A wonderful human being and a friend to so many ((hugs))

    • Hi Melissa – so unexpected. So instant. I wonder what Susan would make of “all the fuss” right now. I suspect she would be reaching out and connecting in her gentle and patient way. Allowing us all to vent our shock before putting it quietly in context. 🙂

Big hugs to you – this too will pass. And until it does – hold tight to having the privilege of knowing her, of seeing her face, of her cat in the background, of her gentle smile and soft words. Those memories are as real as Susan. ((hugs))

  2. As I read your post Paul, and all of these loving comments, I must confess I am simply in shock at the sudden and unexpected loss of our dear sister and friend Susan. It’s hard to express how much she blessed all of us with her wisdom and her humor… and for me at least, how she reminded us that relationship among people who follow Jesus together is one of the most precious gifts of all, and yet a gift that we may tend to take for granted.

I thank God for the chance to have gotten to know Susan, and for the way she blessed so many of us, and look forward to being reunited in God’s loving arms.

    • Hi Don – as the shock of last night became sadness today – I echo your comments.
Feels like quite a collection of very special people are gathering together. The essence of these blogs but so much more.
And pondering that growing crowd – I am left with a sense of awe. The number of such special people I know, have known amd will know again.
How – as you say – we take these special people for granted while they are “ordinary”.
Not sure why Susan is having this effect – but I love that she is.

      ((hugs))
