“Okay God. Let me see if I have this straight …
You want to have your way with my betrothed – my wife to be.
You want sex without being married first – unlike me.
You want to get her pregnant – not me.
You want your seed to be inside her – not mine.
You want your child to grow inside her – not mine.
You want me to live with a hormonal pregnant wife – made pregnant by you not me.
You then want me to watch this baby born – not mine.
And you want me to being this child up as mine – but not mine.
And you say this is to fulfill the prophecies.
And you say this is You – the You who created the whole shebang, all the stuff we thank you for, all the stuff we give back to you.
And what about all that stuff about no sex before marriage (it’s just that it seems a bit “relevant”) – how does that fit into this?
It comes second to making all the prophecies about us come true?
And you want me and Mary – and all who know us – to be willing accomplices to this arrangement?
Are you serious?
You are serious.
Okay then. But I have one request, God.
Let me write Mary’s response to this. She is just a woman – on top of that she has a sharp tongue in her head – I know! So I put my money on her words not being as on message as they could be …
That’s a deal?
Okay then – a Christmas baby as well! That’ll save on the pressie budget!
(now where did I put my tablet … )”

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.” And Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned to her home.
