Necessary since so many know where they are not welcome, to be welcomed if sincerely is comforting and helps the outcast feel hopeful. Though it is necessary to test the invitation.
It should not be necessary. I complied a directory of LGBT friendly churches, back in 1999, to do so I telephoned Manses and Rectories and Presbyteries and asked the question ” Are LGBT people welcome in your Parish?” It was difficult but we did have the listings for the Counselling service for whom I worked.
It just struck me these signs says something that should not need to be said. And as for “all are welcome”, I have seen (and heard) public avowal alongside semi-private/public exclusion.
I am of the mind that this one – the LGBT debate – is less biblical (but publicly claimed as such) and more cultural (and privately endorsed as such). Just the same as any bigotry and a public denial: “Some of my best friends are (fill in blank)”
Yes, Paul, Social or Christian it always leads the bigots into a safe place of comfy truth in the fundamental but non contextual O.T., or even a holiday in Rome or Corinth
