Craving the future

What if there was no sin?  What if sin was a word that had never been invented … a word never used … a concept never taught … a reality that was a complete unreality? How would the bible read then … how would this whole “eternal life” and “unconditional love” read then?  What would we be taught of God and Jesus and forgiveness and being saved?

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”  Mark 10:35-45

“Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John.

We manage to screw things up without any sin at all.  We have the capacity to want more than we need … more than we can handle … more than makes any sense at all …

And all without ever sinning at all.

My thought is what would my life look like if we all lived in the moment?  If actions and words were not some chemical reaction for resurrecting past hurts and offences … not a gateway to remembered stuff that we choose to store for this moment … ?

“Teacher, we cannot imagine a moment being distant from you. We desire this time never ends but we don’t know how that works for you or us.”  When the ten heard this, they drew together and agreed this was how each of them thought and felt.

No sin.  No lectures.  No saving.  What teaching then?

Maybe this …

“Why crave the future at all?  Why carry confusion with “how this all works”?  This moment is what you desire …. is free of any confusion … is all that you desire … is already yours.  Why not embrace THIS moment?  And then you don’t “need me” to grant you anything … you already have all that you desire.“

I think we have taken too much love out of teaching the bible.  Put too much craving and confusion back in.  Taken unconditional love out and replaced it with sin.  Made eternity something we can’t have right now.  Made sin the juice that runs the engine …

Made craving the future taint the present.

And I don’t know why anymore
