Why my Jewish referrences?

Well I receive the Daily Dose of wisdom from Chabad in my inbox and I am inspired to unite the old and the new with a little reinterpretation.

Most of us have come across Bible verses such as these:

New International Version
“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”(Jeremiah 31:33 NIV) [The word “covenant” is the traditional translation of the Hebrew word berith.[2] Berith does not however mean a two-sided contract between equal partners but a one-sided commitment and stipulation whereby the powerful lord enters into a self-imposed obligation, while on the other hand obligations are imposed upon the passive recipient]

New International Version
“This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” (Hebrews 10:16 NIV)

And from Jesus himself:

New International Version
For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(Matthew 5:18 NIV)

This Covenant, this Law is Torah and Jesus tells us here, that the complete Torah is with us until heaven and earth disappear, so what is this Mosaic reference to the Exodus have to do with the New Covenant in his blood?

27Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is My blood of the covenant,e which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in My Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26:27-29 Berean Study Bible with Greek )

In the same manner that the Covenant with the Jews was a one sided covenant so is the new covenant because no one made Jesus die for us, Jesus as God made a self-imposed agreement and the onus is on us to follow that covenant.

Now the splitting of the waters

From unbelief to belief is often a baptism of fire as the conflicting thoughts and concepts flood our hearts and minds with the ramifications of accepting this free gift of Salvation. Can I keep the covenant? Jesus said that everything in the Old Law still stands, all those big and little requirements. Yet he did say to Love one another as he has loved us and to love our neighbour as ourselves, for this is the fulfilment of all the Law and the Prophets. I guess that is OK then, when Jesus puts it that way it is not half as frightening than those icky things in Leviticus.

And, so we walk from the Egypt of our former self through the Reed Sea into the Promised salvation of a restated covenant. Jesus’ Blood for our Souls survival in more comfortable surrounds than the fire we have harboured these past days, months, years. The waters split, metaphorically, and we are dry shod as we embrace our new lives in Christ. In the splitting of the waters are revealed to us, gifted to our hearts the Perfect Law of the Lord.

Psalm 19:
7The Law of the LORD is perfect,

reviving the soul;

the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy,

making wise the simple.

8 The precepts of the LORD are right,

bringing joy to the heart;

the commandments of the LORD are radiant,

giving light to the eyes.

9 The fear of the LORD is pure,

enduring forever;

the judgments of the LORD are true,

being altogether righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,

than much pure gold;

they are sweeter than honey,

than honey from the comb.

11 By them indeed Your servant is warned;

in keeping them is great reward.

Of course, we have to make this our own, meditating on the precious gift of Jesus until it is warm in the cockles of our hearts, woven in between the sinews, between the marrow and the bone, where the Holy Spirit discerns our true nature. That our Nature comes to match hIs Nature.

And love meets love in a piece of bread and a cup of wine and water.
