The Torah Walk

This is a walk every member of the Jewish faith is called to walk. To walk in the way of the Lord, is to study the Torah day and night to learn and keep its precepts. Such that one might create the living Torah within the heart.

These are the leading scripture references, to the Torah Walk, with Rashi’s Commentary from Chabad:

Tehillim -Psalms 119  1. Fortunate are those whose way is artless, who walk with the Torah of the Lord.2. Fortunate are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with all their hearts. 3. Indeed, they have not done iniquity; they walk in His ways.

Tehillim -Psalms 34: 15 Shun evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.

Devarim-Deuteronomy 5: 30 In all the way which the Lord, your God, has commanded you, you shall go, in order that you may live and that it may be well with you, and so that you may prolong your days in the land you will possess.

While the exact nature of the Torah can be debated among practitioners of the Jewish faith, all agree that the primary purpose of the Torah is to divulge the heritage of the Jewish people and the ways of life ascribed to them by God.

To put it simply the Torah Walk is to Study Torah.

Does this have any part in the lives of Christians?

Some will say that the Law applies equally now as then. Read carefully what Jesus says after Matthew 5 verses 17-20. In his fulfilling of the Law Jesus calls us to a higher law wherein even our thoughts are crimes against others as in lust is as adultery.

The Fulfillment of the Law

17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.( Matthew 5:17-20 NIV)

   The Mosaic Covenant is a treaty God made with the Jews, the nation of Israel. What was the point of the book of Deuteronomy? Deuteronomy is the second time the law is given. It is first given in Exodus when Moses is at Mount Sinai. There’s 40 years of wandering and the first generation dies away. Then there’s a new generation that takes the land under Joshua. Before Moses dies he gives that same law again a second time in Deuteronomy to the new generation that is now meant to take the land and live according to this law as a nation. The important thing is that this is an agreement that God made with Israel. It is not an agreement God made with anyone else. ( How does the Old Testament law apply to Christians today?)

SO What?

In a previous post I explored the difference between Paul’s comments on Law and people such as King David’s experiences and, if you go and take another look it certainly seems that they are two different things.

The actual Law is but part of the Torah, you must have read it and it tells a story of a People and their/the God and the Covenant God made with them. There is the Theophany when the Decalogue is given on Mount Sinai, and in Leviticus the 613 commandments relating to every aspect of Jewish life i.e., the rites, rituals, customs, morals, and social justice. There are different laws for Men and Women for Lay people and for Priests. Jesus may have fulfilled the Law though as a Jewish Male he was only required to keep those aspects of the Law pertinent to single males. So, Jesus did not keep the entire Law though in his salvific death he made atonement for all crimes against it. He took our iniquity upon himself and became for us our Passover from Death to Life.

Therefore, Torah does not equal Law since Law is but part of it. So, asking again – do we as Christians have to keep Torah? Some Messianic Jews do not believe they have to keep the legal aspects of the Torah  – read some of this The Torah – from a Messianic Jewish perspective – ONE FOR ISRAEL Ministry Others do Difference Between Messianic Judaism and Christianity | Jewish Voice To simplify it is more the Feasts and Festivals or liturgy of Torah which is retained as integral to the Jewish believer who becomes a Christian.

For the secular genetic Jew, I don’t quite know how to regard this. In Australia there are Messianic Jews, as in Jews for Jesus who are Gentiles.

The answer really is quite simple: this is a question, the answer to which varies between various branches of Messianic Judaism – of Jews who believe in Jesus. Not a question Gentile Christians are required to answer.

Is the Torah still Relevant to Gentile Christians?
