Your very own milliseconds

I just love Facebook.  Saw this piece this morning …

SON: “Daddy, may I ask you a question?”
DAD: “Yes, what is it?”
SON: “How much do you make an hour?”
DAD: “That’s none of your business.?”
SON: “I just want to know.  Please tell me how much?”
DAD: “If you must know, I make $100 an hour.”
SON: “Oh I see.”
(pause – then … )
SON: “Daddy, can I borrow $50 …. please?”
DAD: “If the only reason you asked is to borrow some money then you march yourself straight to your room.  Think about why you are being so selfish.  I work hard for our money.”
The little boy went to his room and shut the door. Dad sat there fuming. But when he calmed down, he wondered – maybe there was something his son really needed to buy with that $50 – and he hardly ever asked for money. So he went to the boy’s room.
DAD: “Are you asleep, son?”
SON: “No daddy, I’m awake.”
DAD: “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier.  Sorry.  I’ve had a long day and took it out on you.  Here’s the $50 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up, smiling.
SON: “Oh, thank you, thank you!”
Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled bills and slowly counted what he had.  Dad saw the money and started to get angry again, but the little boy just smiled and looked up at his father.
DAD: “Why did you want money if you already have some?”
SON: “Because I didn’t have enough and now I do (pauses and draws himself up) Daddy …can you come home tomorrow and have dinner with us?  Can I buy one of your work hours?  Can I daddy?  Here … I have $100 now ….?”
The father was crushed.
He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.

It’s just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life.  We shouldn’t let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts.   If we die tomorrow, our company can replace us in days or weeks.   Our family and friends never ever can.  Some things are important.

Yep. It’s pure hackneyed “corn” and yes, it can be dismissed.

But this morning – milliseconds before my rational sensible corny dismissive brain kicked-in – These Words Got Me.   They got me right inside.  Where the important stuff happens.

I hope so much you have your very own milliseconds today.
